Stranger in Paradise (Screening with UK)
Kampus Hybernská | 19:00–22:00
What do you really want from Europe? Are we just a garden of paradise for you, the fruits of which you can pluck in bulk? Similar questions are heard by exhausted immigrants who have just crossed the sea and arrived on European shores. The main character of the documentary about the dilemmas of migration is the Belgian actor Valentijn Dhaenens, who, in the role of a mentor, confronts immigrants with model reactions of Europeans to their arrival in his lectures. Warn of problems or support dreams of a better life? Who will get the chance to stay in Europe and on the basis of which key to choose them? One thing is certain: entry into "paradise" is decided by far more complex mechanisms than the mere determination and will of foreigners. Which scenario will play out one of the greatest stories of our time - a tale of migration, hope and disillusionment in which everyone is forced to play a role?

Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has been resisting unbridled Russian aggression. Millions of people fled their homes before the war, tens of thousands perished, kindergartens, museums and churches were brutally destroyed. The world admires the extent to which the Ukrainians refused to submit to the will of the Moscow dictator despite the massive war pressure. At the same time, the huge country struggles not only with the superiority of the eastern invaders, but also with its own cultural and historical heritage. Czech TV news reporters offer an unobscured critical view of the weaknesses of the defending Ukraine, such as post-Soviet rigidity, endemic corruption, institutionalized machismo or intergenerational tensions. And he finds sparks of hope in the determination of young men and women to defend their homeland and soon turn it into a functioning free-spirited democracy. David Miřejovský and Darja Stomatová will present the books: Putin's War, which was published last year, and Struggling Ukraine, which will be published in May 2024.
